‘Pananlian’ is the overarching theme for the university-wide theater guild of University of Santo Tomas’ 38th Season, which will feature the first prize winner at the 2014 Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for one-act play in Filipino titled ‘Traje de Boda’ written by Maria Kristine Roxas and ‘Huling Ensayo Para Sa Iyo’ by Niel de Mesa at the Tan Yan Kee Auditorium on August 25 to 26, 2015 with shows at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm; and on August 27, 2015 with shows at 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm.

In Roxas’ ‘Traje de Boda’—it presents an all-female performers set in a bridal shower scene, delivered in a bold and comical forum. ‘The Love Affair’: Is Not the Usual Mistress Movie

This may not be Bea Alonzo‘s first time to assume the character of a mistress, but this time around as a young woman attorney named Adie who found another chance of love in the arms of a neurosurgeon played by Richard Gomez as Vince and is married for 25 years to Tricia portrayed by Dawn Zulueta.

Contrary to the many melodrama films that centered on the struggles of a mistress, this Nuel Naval film struggles in the areas of presenting the characters’ struggle between Vince and Tricia. Despite the fact that the two seasoned actors who have been acclaimed for their previous performances especially during their heydays may have ‘somehow’ failed to deliver what is required of them as acting out their characters. In all fairness to both, they did all their best in order to essay their respective pained and flawed characters.

However, watching them together onscreen again is just enough delight for those who missed their tandem and loopholes in their characters may have been set aside, somehow. Both haven’t lost their ‘chemistry’ on and off screen and they still are lovely to look at, as a loveteam.

Vanessa Valdez, the screenwriter may have mustered all she could in order to differentiate this film that tackles about a mistress-slanted film as opposed to the previous movies that offered the same theme, but somehow fell short. In its storytelling, I was quite disturbed why the repetitive flashbacks where the root of conflict between Vince and Tricia all started. It was about their past mistakes that fueled to enter into another mistake and not by their shortcomings as humans.

Among the three leads, Alonzo is perhaps the most solid. Why so? In her trauma from her own family, where his father Pancho (Al Tantay) had a second wife (Ana Capri) was her life’s issue in getting into a relationship and was even a victim herself when her fiancé breathed by a cameo appearance of Tom Rodriguez, who cheated on her when he had a sexual encounter with a model.

Adie’s two memorable scenes are with her father and the daughter of Vince and Tricia, Cassie (Jane Oineza). Valdez made those two scenes very effective in piercing the hearts of the audience and made them understand fully the third character as someone not to be hated, but to be sympathized with.

Acting-wise, both Dawn and Bea deserves if not awards at least nominations. Even if their confrontation scene weren’t as comparable to the many intense scenes that Vilma Santos have found herself in former Viva movies; still it was handled quite well.

‘The Love Affair’ is perhaps to be dubbed as not the usual mistress-type of flick and is still showing in theaters nationwide.

If the film 1990 American romantic fantasy film was a huge hit back then, it is certain that the latest addition to the Kapamilya Gold block, which is titled—‘All Of Me’ and is set to premiere on Monday, August 31. It is predicted to be a certified top-rater due to its story and its characters as it highlights love as a channel of blessings and not as an isolated island.

De Guzman plays the younger Dr. Manuel Figueras. Image courtesy of 'All Of Me' facebook account.

The said series marks JM de Cuzman’s major TV comeback as a lead, as the young good-natured, but ambitious, loving and charitable Dr. Manuel Figueras. He will be paired with a promising young actress Yen Santos as Lena, the immature and sincere love interest. Playing the senior Manuel is veteran actor—Albert Martinez.

Manuel’s former protégé, Dr. Henry Nieves is ably portrayed by Arron Villaflor. The love triangle will be an interesting plot to hook its audience to watch the said series.

Also in the cast are Ana Capri, Neri Naig, Micah Muñoz, Jordan Herrera, Sue Ramirez and a lot more. Jaime Fabregas, Ina Raymundo and Angel Aquino have their cameo roles as the doctor-philathropist, his first wife Diana Figueras and Manuel’s mother.

The story centers on Manuel’s question about how much more of him is he going to give in the name of love since he already has the ‘fear’ of losing all the people he loved in the past. Its major conflict is when Manuel had the chance of coming back as his wish was granted by a fairy, but no longer the same Manuel—this time a much, much younger man and only to find out that his wife Lena is now in love with Henry.

‘All Of Me’ is directed by Dondon Santos and promises to provide a cinematic feast for its viewers eyes and a much fast-paced storytelling. It will be shown right after ‘It’s Showtime’.

Official Poster of ‘#R</3J’.

QUEZON CITY, Philippines—A multimedial hallucination take on the tragic love story of William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ will be the basis for Dulaang UP’s Ruby anniversary and 40th theater season opener titled ‘#R</3J’ (hashtag R broken-heart J), which opened on Wednesday, August 26 till Sunday, September 13 at Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, Palma Hall, UP-Diliman.

The said presentation marks Santos’s first play as DUP’s newest artistic director. It is a collaboration of professionals and up-and-coming artists. Dexter M. Santos heads the artistic team as the show’s director along with Guelan Varela-Luarca as the playwright who adapted the piece on two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. Krina Cayabyab (music composition and design), John Batalla (lights design), Ohm David (set design), Winter David, (video design), and Darwin Desoacido (costume design) are also part of the team in making sure to providing the audience with an exceptional play that the university-based theater has been doing since then. This project features the Dulaang UP Ensemble and the works of young choreographers, video designers, installation artists, and dramatists with theater veterans like Ricky Ibe, Mitoy Sta. Ana, and Leo Rialp.

Three of the cast members in ‘#R</3J’ include Mitoy Sta. Ana as Mayor Capule in the middle with two of DUP's up-and-coming artists--Stephen Viñas as Tybalt, J's cousin and Fran Go as J. Photograph courtesy of DUP and Dino Dimar.

‘#R</3J’ retells the story and transforms the setting of Verona into a concrete jungle at the heart of Metro Manila—teeming with corruption, revolt, advertisements, sex, social media, and condominium units. It captures the essence of the most enduring tragedy juxtaposing the young lovers’ romance with the present society’s many forms of ‘commodified’ and ‘convoluted’ love. Scenes on globalization, ultra-violence, Internet foolishness, generation gap do seek to dramatize via a psychedelic mix of all available art forms, the post-modern tragedy of our generation. But with all its efforts of destroying the city, the family, the government, even Shakespeare—it will never triumph over love.

DUP’s ‘#R

(A Review)

Numerous attempts have been adapted to stage William Shakespeare’s 1597 classic play—‘Romeo and Juliet’ and through Dulaang UP’s 40th Theater Season, an original play that is adapted by Guelan Varela-Luarca and gave it a more relevant take, which includes its title—‘#R</3J’ with two of the premiere university-based theater company’s up-and-coming stars—Roco Sanchez and Francesca Go as R Montes and J Capule (the localized version of Romeo and Juliet), respectively.

Frankly, the said production need not worry of its response because it already has a cult following on Shakespeare alone and everyone would just simply go and check on what this first directorial stint of the newest artistic director of DUP—Dexter M. Santos has envisioned on this popular literary piece. Anyone who hasn’t seen Santos’s works may find this stage presentation either amusing or confusing, but personally—I love the choreography in this adaptation especially of course the love scene between R and J.

Even if the choreography was a collaboration of sorts by Santos along with Japhet Mari Cabling, Al Bernard Garcia, Jeff Rm Garcia, Isagani Tayag and Stephen Viñas; the entire run of the play, those who are familiar with Santos’s works—would really say that his imprints are all over it. But this time, more tamed, and more endearing. The ensemble succeeded in providing certain episodes or emotions and all that will help set the mood of a particular scene in dance and creative movements.

Three veteran stage actors Leo Rialp as Shakespeare, Ricky Ibe as Congressman Montes, and Mitoy Sta. Ana as Mayor Capule were all brilliant in their respective characters. Ibe who may have tried channeling the looks of Toby Tiangco or Miro Quimbo in his mind, but none of them is an orator; still he managed to be great in his acting. He was a bit distracted in the scene (briefly) where he and Sta. Ana had to deliver a speech simultaneously with different texts. However, his interpretations of the interviewer were more appealing since any member from the audience could insinuate that he’s mimicking Boy Abunda. His Boy Abunda interpretation was truthful, and didn’t impress me as mere or cheap impersonation at all; it has a slight distinction. Nothing to worry that he would suffer in comparison to Jason Gainza’s interpretation of the King of Talk. Mitoy on the other hand, as Mayor Capule also did great as he tried to amalgamate all those matinee idols-turned-politicians like Senator Bong Revilla, Isko Moreno, Jinggoy Estrada and more. He was such a riot, too.

Among the ensemble, it was Stephen Viñas who stood out since he effectively breathed into the role of Tybaldo or Tybalt Capule Jr. with his swagger moves. While Jon Abella as Markky fell short as the buddy-secret gay lover of R; he lacked the needed emotions of being an ignored friend after he expressed his feelings toward his friend (at least during his own moments), but I know the actor has more chances of redeeming himself in the next runs of the show; he’s a brilliant and a promising talent still.

Two of the scenes that I somehow violently reacted was when the psychiatrist was pseudo-lecturing about the three stages of love, which I find it a bit unnecessary. Yes, the movements were beautifully executed by the ensemble where they shifted from one emotion to the other just to paint a certain scenario where J could have gotten through in the process. Then the video scene of R’s suicide was totally different from what was acted on stage. Was that intended to be stylized? If so, I still think it was inconsistent as a piece of evidence to the character’s death.

But, two of the most moving and probably quotable quotes in the play are the lines that R uttered: “We were impossible but we made it happened” and “Love is a Drug, but never say NO to it.”

Moving and quiet, but surely was a great statement that 'Love Wins' amid any chaotic world. Photograph by Eduard John Pulido.

As a whole, this adaptation is resplendently unique in many ways, the Varela-Luarca adaptation has that ‘charm’ to attract viewers and theater lovers to flock to Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater and witness this spectacular stage performance that will run till September 13. It is one piece that is a not-to-be-missed since it retold the story of the star-crossed lovers and transformed the setting of Verona into a concrete jungle at the heart of Metro Manila set in 2015, which is teeming with corruption, revolt, advertisements, sex, social media, and condominium units. It truly captured the essence of the most enduring tragedy juxtaposing the young lovers’ romance with the present society’s many forms of ‘commodified’ and ‘convoluted’ kind of love.

After their successful collaboration in a 2014 stage production–‘Bonifacio and The Freakshow’ which utilized rap in dialogues and pop culture songs as musical numbers rendered through a live 60+ piece string ensemble of University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) Harmonya, held at the Dioscorro Umali Hall—Joey Ting and Layeta Bucoy is reunited in a play titled ‘Coro de los Diablos’, adapted from English novelist William Golding’s ‘The Lord of the Flies’, set on September 25 (Friday), 7pm; September 26 (Saturday) and 27 (Sunday), 3pm and 7pm, respectively at Tanghalang Hermogenes Ylagan of the College of Arts and Letters building, UP Diliman.

Vincent Pajara as Migs and Gabo Tolentino as Sam, together with acting recital projects of Mark Mirando as Jules, Charm Aranton as Pat, Lei Ann Quinquileria as Donna and Kyrstynne Vargas as Girlie.

Vincent Pajara as Migs and Gabo Tolentino as Sam, together with acting recital projects of Mark Mirando as Jules, Charm Aranton as Pat, Lei Ann Quinquileria as Donna and Kyrstynne Vargas as Girlie.

The play will be mounted by Dulaang Laboratoryo in Diliman.

Director Joey and playwright Layeta are both UPLB faculty members under the Department of Humanities. Ting teaches speech communication and theatre classes while playwright Bucoy handles Filipino and creative writing classes.

Golding’s novel was adapted into a film shot on location at Lipanta, Padre Burgos, in Quezon Province back in 1975. The ace comedian Roderick Paulate and Eddie Villamayor, both were young during those times were the stars of the said screen production that was produced by the one and only Superstar—Nora Aunor and was written by Nicanor Cleto Jr. and directed by Lupita A. Concio.

However from a very serious tone of drama, the Layeta Bucoy-version of ‘Coro de los Diablos’ has turned into a dark humour instead. It explores young male and female students that could have attended the World Youth Convention, but their plane crashed along with the other attendees on a mysterious island, unidentified, uninhabited and seemingly possessed. For days, survivors have volunteered to initially cooperate but as the action thickens, leadership has put to question with malice. Apart from the tone, the play is set to World War III that developed psychological imbalances on the students due to chemical substances that may have affected the minds of the young survivors since air-borne diseases are generally hazardous.

The approach of the play is different as Ting provides and prepares the actors their physical, emotional, psychological attributes, which is a challenging task to the ensemble. This is likely to appeal to young audiences since it is compared to the best-selling novel by American author Suzanne Collins of ‘The Hunger Games’, but Golding’s ‘The Lord of the Flies’ came first, but this time presents the atrocities of war with discourses on science-fiction and futuristic mood. Its set, costumes, its music and its sound, visuals and acting—have been unified to clearly state the current conditions of the Philippines and the whole world.

The production boasts of competent and hardworking cast members that feature Vincent Pajara as Migs and Gabo Tolentino as Sam, together with acting recital projects of Mark Mirando as Jules, Charm Aranton as Pat, Lei Ann Quinquileria as Donna and Kyrstynne Vargas as Girlie.

Artistic team members are – Io Balanon for set and props design, Mark Mirando for costume and styling, Arvy Dimaculangan for music and sound, Pamela Paige for lighting, Joyce Garcia for video, Carlo Aranton for poster design and Prof. Vladimeir Gonzales for photography. Also included in the students’ recital are Kyrstynne Vargas (production management), Ryan Nuňez (technical direction) with the help of their fellow majors namely Nica Marcelo (stage management), Mandrake (stage hands), Mara Agleham (sounds apprentice) and Chibi Manalo (sounds boardman).

UP Department of Speech Communication and Theater Arts faculty advisers are Prof. Banaue Miclat-Janssen and Dr. Alexander Cortez.

Direk Mae Cruz Alviar directs the first original StarFlix on ABS-CBN mobile. Photograph courtesy of Direk Alviar’s facebook account.

‘Must Date the Playboy’, ABS-CBN mobile’s first-ever StarFlix original film is one of the many things that Kapamilyas must take advantage with as it features the blockbuster loveteam of Kim Chiu and Xian Kim or KimXi (as coined) under the direction of Mae Cruz Alviar; as it premiered on Monday, August 31. This exclusive film, which is created specifically for Kapamilyas and for ABS-CBNmobile subscribers to enjoy quality entertainment at anyone’s leisure.

Alviar admitted that it was a challenge for her, “Since this is a maiden project of ABS-CBN Mobile’s StarFlix, it was a challenge for me in determining the format. It’s like a mix of TV and film. It’s new for me because I’ve never done anything like this.”

StarFlix Movie: An Advantage Rather than a Disadvantage!

Despite the fact that there are a lot of shows offered by ABS-CBN, the mobile film is not even in competition with the rest of the shows and the films it has produced and will be producing in the future. In fact, it has created more venues or platforms for its valued patrons and subscribers to have a variety of choices to spend one’s free time.

Direk Mae added, “So far, it is an advantage. The viewers can watch it at their convenience. There’s no screening time to catch. Just watch when you feel like watching it.

“There are also no advertisements that get in the way of the viewing experience. You can also watch it over and over again if you wish.”

In working with Kim and Xian, Again.

This is not the first time that Alviar has worked with the KimXi tandem. She has considered both not just as her artists, but as friends, too. She has also observed that, “They (Chiu and Lim) have matured more both professionally and in their personal lives. Though they have worked well together in the past, I see how their relationship has leveled-up.

“The change I noticed is that they are more comfortable with each other. Kinda like an old couple dynamics. They’re more honest about feelings and there’s a deeper understanding of each other. They are still so supportive of each other but this time with more sensitivity to each other. At work Kim is more playful and makes ‘kulit’ to Xian. She helps him loosen up. Xian on the other hand, has his serious moments and I see how he influences Kim that way. I see how they balance each other out.

Alviar’s Advice to Women Dating and Wanting to Date a Playboy?

Dating a playboy in life may quite be risky and is actually a no-brainer for others not to do it like the character of Tori played by Kim.

However, for Direk Mae, she doesn’t want to impose her way of thinking, but shares these insights for women who are dating and are about to date playboys.

“Get ready for your hearts to be broken! After all the tears, learn from it and be wiser in choosing next time.”

Also starring in the film is Jessy Mendiola as a manipulative brat but loves her friends dearly. Because of the blossoming relationship between Zach (Xian) and Tori (Kim), her friendship with Tori is challenged.

Alviar hinted, “Chloe always says: ‘What Chloe wants, Chloe gets’. Find out if she will still get what she wants till the very end. Will she choose friendship over her selfish and vindictive plan or will she give up Tori who is the closest thing to having a family?”

To complete the crazy cast is Matt Evans as Nathan, playing a gay character.

Watch the trailer of ‘Must Date the Playboy’ here:

For only 10-peso load a day, any ABS-CBNmobile prepaid subscriber and ABS-CBNmobile MHP subscribers can access the movie anywhere, anytime using the ‘IWantTV’ app in their smartphones. Just text ‘IWantv10’ and send to 2135 in order to access the film on 3G or through WiFi. There’s no need for additional Internet load.

Mio Infante takes Pride in 9 Works’ production on ‘La Cage Aux Folles’

Two of the notable things the audience would definitely feast upon the local production of ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ are the costumes and the set designs involved as created by the genius of Mio Infante and is mounted in a rather more intimate venue at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, which re-opened on the 15th of August.

Mio Infante, the scenographer of this latest 9 Works Theatrical’s production, the winner of Best Scenic Designs at Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards for his works—‘The Bluebird of Happiness (2013) and ‘Rak of Aegis’ (2014); talks about herculean tasks he has to accomplish along with his team in order to bring a show that won’t only be remembered because of its great lead actors—Michael De Mesa and Audie Gemora as Georges and Albin or Zaza, respectively.

Through the ‘Beaded Eyelash’ of Albin.

The colour palette of the show is very Mediterranean and is set in St.-Tropez is a coastal town on the French Riviera, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of southeastern France. The place have been popular because of artists and attracted the international jetsetters in the 60s because of its beaches and the nightlife.

According to Infante, he borrowed inspirations from the golden hues of the skies and azure seas, the terracotta colors did find its way into the nostalgic ‘postcard look’ and ‘feel’ of a bygone era. The touches of teal and lavender echo the flora of the area.

“Fitting a ‘big musical’ scene that changes into a small space as was quite challenging,” Mio confessed.

In fact, his challenge didn’t end there since there it involves a thousand and one (quick) costumes, make-up and wig changes. Despite the fact that the originally show meant for a bigger theatrical venue, the director (Robbie Guevara) and him thought best to focus on the intimacy of the plot, that being about family, love and acceptance.

When one looks at Albin’s beaded lashes, everything’s sparkle dust, bugle beads, ostrich plums as described in one of the songs titled—‘(A Little More) Mascara’ performed by Albin and the Cagelles as the world that he’s looking at is beautiful, too.

“Albin is such a strong character. He is an artiste and can have his share of tantrums, despite the challenges of being accepted by the social norms, he ultimately can laugh about it, and selflessly take sidesteps in lieu of unconditional love for his family. He notes that he does this ‘with one great stroke of mascara’ and everything seems and looks better,” Infante added.

With regard to their sets, Robbie Guevara (the director) and Mio agreed to retain the ‘look-and-feel’ of the 1983 original production, which had more froufrou, have lots of sequins and fabulous-ness as opposed to the Chocolate Menier Factory of the said musical in West End and as it transferred to Broadway.

“I had seen that production in London. It was a more gritty and millennial adaptation.”

He also mentioned that the biggest challenge was the script as it required for multiple scenes that had took them inside the apartment, backstage of the club, on the St.-Tropez promenade and back; and the changes had to be fast and seamless.

“We decided on a generic looking set of arched doors that could double up as interiors and exteriors; with a bit of louvered door add-ons that complemented the other scenic drops that flew down from the battens, and we were able to do that. We also extended scenic elements into the auditorium house, so that the audience became part of the cabaret club ‘La Cage’.”

Infante who was a former Cagelle had Repertory Philippines’ 1988 production of the same musical, and second having designed the play version Gay Birds for Rep also in 2005 was a dream task. He shared that the work came easy for him since he’s already quite familiar.

“As a reference point I looked at cabaret drag personalities of the late 70s to early 80s, zeroed-in on the fabulous gowns with sequins of Danny La Rue and also the Liberace style, with echoes of style icons such as Ann Margaret, Lady Diana Spencer, Telly Savalas, and even Margaret Thatcher (for the other characters’ costumes).”

“We first see Albin ‘in-between scenes’, and ‘at home in the kitchen’, the script called for him in a dressing gown, but I figured her style offstage would still exude the flamboyant thespian style. He would be wearing a bustier and slip that would transform into a costume change in full view of the audience, but move well with the ‘Ginger Rogers-type of choreography’.

“Twinkle Zamora (costume execution) and I found this fabulous printed fabric, which we knew would be perfect in electric-pleated and matched with satin details that would put contrast in texture.”

He also shared: “We had several shopping sprees in Divisoria and had the time of our life sifting through bolts and bolts of fabrics in sequins, of all colors and textures. It was like wanting to have all the candy in the candy store. However, we had to restrain ourselves knowing that, ultimately, we had to pick, select, and simplify!”

“On Zaza’s gowns, we had to consider the male form with the type of silhouette that the ‘show costume’ gowns. By putting more fabric and flounce on the bodice and bust area, while showing off a lot of shoulders, we looked into a sexier form of course and added a bit of the hips.”

Cagelles Dressed Fashionably in Drag.

Since the show is dubbed as ‘cage of mad women’, from cagey crinolines to spider webs, Little Bo Peep and Harem girls, to geishas and cloistered nuns, the Cagelles’ costumes are much fun to design. It was the craziness of the cast—their wackiness on-and-offstage is infectious,

“We were very lucky to have been given permission to rummage through Repertory Philippines’ costume collection and (thank you to Tita Baby Barredo). It was fun and nostalgic to see costumes from shows I had been part of before as designer or as an actor. I remember finding a pair of Leopard hi-heeled boots and finding my name scribbled inside it! It was from the 1988 Rep ‘La Cage’ production.

“This show is our homage not only to the Fashion guru’s of the 80s (the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines) who generously and enthusiastically designed the Finale bridal gowns.”

Other costume designers like Tita Celia Diaz Laurel, Tita Baby, etc. We borrowed costumes for Jacobs’ quick costume changes.

While on the wig and make-up, Mio collaborated with the talented Myrene Santos. We went through on different wigs that would flatter the male actors’ faces, keeping with period style, and budgets. We also have female actors in the Cagelle line-up, and it added a challenge to make them look like men in drag—costume and make-up wise.

Orlando Sol sings ‘My Faithful Husband’ Theme Song

MANILA, Philippines – One of the members of The Masculados, Orlando Sol is making a buzz via the song titled ‘Ingatan Mo and Salitang Mahal Kita’ which is the theme song of the currently running drama series on GMA-7 Kapuso network—‘My Faithful Husband’ which premiered on August 10 with Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo as lead stars.

The song was chosen to be the series’ theme song due to its message that reflects the unconditional love of Trillo’s character as Emman, the husband of Mel portrayed by Mercado. Jerwin Nicomedez composed and arranged the love song for Sol.

According to Nicomedez, he wrote the song last year and is based from his personal experience: “Ginawa ko yun sa isang taong mahal na mahal ko. Binigay ko lahat para sa taong yun, in return nakukuha pa din niya akong balewalain at saktan to the point na nakalimutan ko na lahat pati family ko para sa pagmamahal ko sa kanya; kahit alam kong niloloko niya ko nagbubulag- bulagan ako.”

Despite the blindness of his love toward the person he loved, it came to a point that he woke up one day and realized that the one person he loved couldn’t love him back.

Orlando is elated for his song to be part of the hit telenovela that tackles on the faithfulness of a husband, which is rarely given the spotlight since drama shows on the boobtube normally place female as the central character. Besides, apart from the series, he believes that the song is relevant nowadays and would remind humans to refrain from saying the words ‘mahal kita’ without love at all and by mere lip-service only. For him, love is a decision that one should truly commit whole-heartedly and must not be abused in any way possible. He was also asked if he is considering of leaving the longest-running, sing-and-dance, all-male group he is part of.

“Direk Maryo J. my manager is allowing me to explore on other things as well as expand my territory by trying out to sing solo, but it doesn’t mean I am leaving my group.

“Productions56 is a home of premium actors and is also where one of the country’s finest actors like Yul Servo is managed. Who doesn’t want to follow Kuya Yul’s footsteps?” Sol excitedly shares his latest venture.

In July this year, Orlando was also part of the Virgin Labfest stage play titled ‘Huling-Huli’ which was about a middle-aged widow torn between keeping her principles and becoming like the women in her village who have no other means of supporting themselves but offering sexual favors to fishermen in exchange for the chance to buy the fish they caught and resell in the market. He was paired with theater veteran and award-winning actress—Angeline Kanapi. He recently shared the limelight with the one and only Superstar–Nora Aunor in a TV guesting via another hit series on Kapuso Network—‘Pari ‘Koy’.

On the other hand, the song that Sol performed the theme song is the series that reunites Mercado and Trillo after the last project they did together back in 2010, which was the TV remake of the 1990 Viva film of the same title.

Noli at Fili Dekada Dos Mil: PETA’s Modern Take on Rizal’s Two Greatest Novels

$

Every Filipino is required to read Jose Rizal’s two greatest and controversial novels—‘Noli Me Tangera’ and ‘El Filibusterismo’ especially during high school, which perhaps this modern-day take of Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (PETA) of the said classic literary piece[s] via—‘Noli at Fili Dekada Dos Mil’ is fitting for people to watch especially the younger generation to understand fully what Rizal was trying to convey back then.

At first, it was quite difficult to imagine how the playright Nicanor Tiongson would compress the two novels into a two-act play, but after watching it—he succeeded; leaving me with alarming thoughts about what every Filipino must be awaken from the system that has been controlling the nation ever since the Spanish reign in the country.

Ibarra as Mayor, Simon as a Rebel.

These two personas of the character that Rizal has created were the basis for the titles of the two-act play. The first act is titled—Si Mayor Ibarra and the second act is—Si Kumander Simon. Unlike the novels, Tiongson has transformed Ibarra and Simon into the usual characters that Filipinos are exposed to these days—the purist and idealist politician who later on became a rebel.

What makes the play endearing is that fact that the actor who portrayed the alter-egos of Rizal—Ibarra and Simon is Lucho Ayala. He effectively breathed into the two characters. With him onstage, he is one actor that you would still get hooked with as he embodies both the elitist and the socialist characters required in the play.

Lucho sustained the momentum of the said production as he shifted effortless from one character to the other.

Two Mainstream Performers join the Cast.

The Starstruck alumna, Kris Bernal, who has been appearing on films and television series after joining the Kapuso’s talent reality search on the boob tube in 2007, eight years ago. Her pretty face is easily qualifies to portray the ladylove of Ibarra, but became the wife of Salvi played by Jack Yabut.

Bernal’s acting skills is placed to a test as she essayed the character of Clarissa, the modernized version of Maria Clara, who represents the portrait of an ideal Filipina—graceful, beautiful and compassionate.

It is also interesting to see film, TV and stage actress—Liza Dino-Seguerra alternating with Kris. It would be interesting to see her take on Clarissa. Like Bernal, Dino-Seguerra was crowned Miss

Rerun Production is with a Totally Different Set Design

Though PETA decided to mount its version from its first production in 2008, it has a totally different set design by Gino Gonzales that combines pipes and improvised tree roots. It definitely complements well with the shows’ new home—the Springs Production Studios after it opened on a Thursday, September 10.

Perhaps the opening scene is one of the most-awaited scenes in the play, which sets the play’s milieu in the mountains of Sierra Madre where illegal logging is still very much rampant even up to these days.

This telenovela-type of love story of Ibarra and Clarissa in ‘Noli at Fili Dekada Dos Mil’ is brilliantly highlighted by Tiongson and audiences will definitely identify the journey of the lovers.

The show runs until September 27. It is directed by film, TV and stage director Soxie Topacio. For tickets, purchase via TicketWorld or call (632) 8919999; or contact PETA at (632) 725 6244 or +639212255183, or visit www.petatheater.com.

Premiering tonight, September 28, the teleseries titled ‘Ang Probinsyano’ which is topbilled by Coco Martin, the recipient of Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award at the recently concluded 63rd FAMAS Awards is a potential top-rater replacing ‘Nathaniel’.

Martin will be assuming dual roles in the said series—as PO3 Ricardo ‘Cardo’ Dalisay and Police Sr. Inspector Dominador ‘Ador’ B. De Leon, which is also a remake of the 1977 Fernando Poe Jr. film of the same title. In this 2015 version, Coco is paired anew with Maja Salvador as PO3 Glenn Corpuz and Bela Padilla as Carmen De Leon, the wife of Cardo’s twin brother Ador, who was killed in a human trafficking bust and which brought back the long-lost twin brother Cardo to assume the identity of his dead police officer-brother in order to solve the said crime.

According to Martin, assuming the role of Carlo is much difficult as opposed to Ador’s. Both roles have been assumed by the late King of Philippine Action Films—Fernando Poe Jr.

“Si Ador, akong-ako kung gumalaw. Nguni’t ibang-iba si Cardo,” the box-office actor described his two contrasting characters.

In the cast, Albert Martinez, Agot Isidro, Arjo Atayde, Jaime Fabregas, Malou de Guzman, Joey Marquez, Dennis Padilla, Ana Roces, Marvin Yap, Malou Crisologo, Iza Calzado and Susan Roces are among the powerhouse cast members. The series is predicted to reign on TV Primetime Bida Slots and in Philippine television as well. The said series is in partnership with Dreamscape Entertainment Television and FPJ Productions; under the directions of Malu Sevilla and Avel Sunpongco.

Manila, Philippines–The restaging of THE NORMAL HEART, produced by Actor’s Actors Inc./The Necessary Theatre, closes today at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati City.

BroadwayWorld.com recently sat down with Bart Guingona, the play’s director and one of its lead actors who plays Ned Weeks, an activist in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The character of Weeks actually acts as the alter ego of Larry Kramer, the play’s author.

Guingona’s Ned Weeks

In last year’s TV film adaptation of THE NORMAL HEART, directed by Ryan Murphy, American actor Mark Ruffalo played the role of Weeks.

About his version of Weeks, Guingona said, “We have very different temperaments. Plus we are working in different mediums. I’ve been told I’m more volatile and abrasive while he is a more vulnerable, more humane Ned Weeks.”

He added that as Weeks, “it entails special challenges.”

“I found particularly difficult about playing Ned Weeks was having to surface the very character traits I hate in myself–verbosity, pedantry, opinionated-ness. I pity all the people who have to deal with me offstage. I must be insufferable.”

‘Everyday I Love You’ in the Eyes of Direk Mae Cruz-Alviar

In an exclusive interview, Direk Mae Cruz-Alviar talks about her latest directorial job–‘Everyday I Love You’, her reunion movie with Soberano and Gil, after another romantic comedy film—‘She’s the One’, they did together two years ago. This time, the inclusion of Gerald Anderson as Tristan Montelibano, a laid-back ‘haciendero’ and as Audrey’s boyfriend who is in a coma–is enough to rock the boat and pique the interest of LizQuen’s successful team-up.

Opening on the 28th of this month, the latest offering of Star Cinema, a romantic-drama flick and another treat for moviegoers who go for such themed-stories. After the success of their tandem—both on TV and on the silver screen via their last outing—‘Just the Way You Are’, the LizQuen (Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil) loveteam is back with a rather more complex love story plus with Gerald Anderson as the third wheel.

Direk Cruz shares her thoughts on her three lead stars (Gerald, Liza and Enrique).

Since it’s not Direk Mae’s first time to work with Gerald, she has observed the growth of her actor, “I’ve known Gerald the longest and though he has always been a good actor, he has grown even more in the past years.

“He handles his character with more sensitivity now and that I think is his strength. His experience working with so many actors and directors on notable projects is his other strength; it has also helped him.”

On the other hand, she also describes the two other actors—Liza and Enrique’s development as individuals and as partners in their loveteam, “Enrique has always been serious about acting even in ‘She’s the One’. Even more so now… He is unfazed by the success of his recent projects and has kept grounded. He’s really open to learning and improving. His passion and humility is his strength. His openness about his emotions is also his strength.

“Liza’s strength is her depth even at such a young age. You see it in her eyes. Her innocence and honesty are also her strength. You get very raw emotions from her. She also values work and her professionalism is something to highlight with. She has honed ‘drawing’ her emotions which she used to have a hard time when she was new (and much younger).”

Bacolod: The Backdrop of a Love Triangle.

Though it was really required in the story and the city of Silay in Bacolod was the ideal location for the film, for it provides a friendly ambiance for the viewers to watch and imbibe so as for the cast and crew of the film, she also explored other neighboring places in the city. After all, the place wouldn’t be known as a ‘City of Smiles’ if it hasn’t impressed many of its warmth and its hospitality for the visitors.

Though she didn’t require her actors to study the dialect or the native tongue in order to be authentic, culturally; she mentions, “We decided to make them speak in Tagalog so that it would be easier for the audience to understand. I did insert a few Hiligaynon words here and there for the non-Negrenses. We also included actual Negrenses so they could deliver adlibs in their dialect.

The shooting occurred in Silay and its neighboring places. she adds, “We went there twice. The first was in August and we were there for four days. The next was in September till early October. We were there for 11 days.”

Lessons from the Film?

Alviar, while filming, she has one thing to share for all the families out there in expressing love.

She says that the best gift a person could give to his or her loved one, “Though, it depends on the person but generally, it would be something the person may have mentioned to you in passing and given randomly. It is just a gesture to say—‘I pay attention to what you say and that I won’t wait for a special occasion to give it’.

Among the three lead characters in the film, it’s Enrique’s character—Ethan that she could relate herself with: “I have been hurt before and I put up a wall like him. It was hard to express how I feel and I used to open up to just a chosen few. Like him, when I found the right person, I learned how to give love more freely and to put the person before me.”

‘Everyday I Love You’ also stars Ariel Rivera, Aiko Melendez, Carmina Villaroel, Marissa Delgado, Liza Lorena, Carla Martinez, Eva Darren, Andrea Brillantes—to name a few. If people enjoyed the two Hollywood flicks—‘While You were Sleeping’ (1995) and ‘50 First Dates’ (2004), which have some semblances in terms of ‘conflicts’ between characters; this Star Cinema-produced visual feast is a sure winner as well.

The love triangle of LizQuen with Gerald is reminiscent of the ‘love triangles’ found in Koreanovelas where the third party is someone that viewers would be rooting as well in the midst of Audrey’s choosing for the ‘man of her dreams’ and ‘the man who makes her dreams come true.’
